How to clean and import your contacts into a Mailchimp audience

The Importly team · Published 2026-06-28

Importing a contact list into a Mailchimp audience is easy to get wrong: invalid emails bounce, duplicates eat your contact quota (Mailchimp bills per contact), and unmapped columns land as messy data. A quick cleanup first protects your deliverability and your bill.

Why a raw list hurts in Mailchimp

  • Invalid or duplicated emails. Bounces damage your sender reputation; duplicates inflate your contact count.
  • Merge fields don't line up. Mailchimp expects "Email Address", "First Name", "Last Name" — your file may use other names or languages.
  • Trailing spaces and mixed case in emails create "different" contacts that are really the same person.

The fast way with Importly

  1. Upload your contact export (.xlsx or .csv).
  2. Pick the "Mailchimp — Audience" profile. Importly maps your columns to Mailchimp's fields, validates and normalizes the emails, removes duplicate contacts, and drops empty rows.
  3. Download the import-ready file and import it into your Mailchimp audience.

What gets cleaned

  • Column mapping to Mailchimp's audience fields (Email Address, First Name, Last Name…).
  • Emails trimmed, lower-cased and de-duplicated — fewer bounces, no double-billing.
  • Names tidied (capitalization, stray spaces).
  • Empty rows removed.

A cleaner list means better deliverability and a lower contact count. The same works for Brevo, ActiveCampaign, Klaviyo, MailerLite and other email tools — just pick the matching profile.
